I don't hear anything

Make sure the volume isn't set to minimum.

Make sure the volume level in Windows is not muted or set to minimum. To do that, access the Volume Control panel in Windows and set the master volume (left adjuster) to the midway position.

Playback is distorted

Make sure the volume level in Windows is not set at too low a level as this requires you to set the volume to too high a level thereby causing distortion.
